Hotels in Films: Festen

Anyone who works in banqueting, knows that some of the celebratory dinners can get out of hand.

Anyone who has watched Festen (1998) will not forget it. Thomas Vinterberg’s ultra-real, documentary-style film creeps up on you as it moves towards the final horrific scene–a speech in honour of the father celebrating his sixtieth birthday. He is a hotel owner, and his children return to the place that was once their home. It would be unfair to show the legendary final scene here–or rather, I wold advise you just to watch this typical scene at the reception first, where the two sons try to get a room in their dad’s hotel. It will get you into the mood. If you missed it, find the whole film and experience Festen. Hurry.
